‘This Brutal House’, @sjcarthy ‘s poetic video piece for 14F LA ‘17 captured solitary human figures twisting, turning and falling to a sublime soundtrack composed by @gunngary. Describing it as “an achingly slow-motion hip-hop dance move executed in large-scale hi-def sound-drenched single-channel projection” @vice selected it as one of the exhibition’s most beautiful pieces.

  • #tbt. Long live NYC’s Hitters. 5 years since 14F collaborator and filmmaker @sjcarthy shot his first films with the dancers in Manhattan, this is the trailer for ‘Hitters’ which documents the world of bboy culture and the art of street dance, soundtracked by the delectable ‘Sour Soul' from @realghostfacekillah and @badbadnotgood on @lexrecords.

Scott Carthy is an Irish filmmaker whose intimate, observational style of directing brings unique aspects of communities to screen in a visual style that captures their energy and culture. Since graduating from Kingston University in 2014, he has garnered a prestigious roster of clientele, from Levis and Samsung to Vice and I-D to the Tate Modern in London. Recent work includes a stylised and intimate documentary that followed record-breaking singer-songwriter Jess Glynne as she embarked on her first arena tour and throughout the development of her highly anticipated second album.

  • As 14F is planning our next location, we want to highlight our artists and their current work/projects.
Years of research into the human visual system have informed Doug Foster’s use of repeating spatial patterns and subtle temporal rhythms to stimulate primal areas of the brain. Foster’s piece for ‘Beyond the Road’ appeared like a rippling portal to another dimension.
While the swirling vortex of The Dormouse sucked visitors into the belly of 14F LA, the cosmic dimensions of The Marvel created a black hole at its heart. Swipe to see stills from these two video installations.
If you’re in London, stop by @beyond_projects from @punchdrunkuk and @saatchi_gallery, to see @dougfosterart’s latest video installation. .

  • ‘2 million and 1 / hong kong 16062019’ - a powerful image of our times taken at the recent Hong Kong protests by our very own Movana Chen - the award-winning fabric and performance artist whose tapestries, made with shredded pages from treasured texts, weave personal narratives into visionary pieces.
In Movana’s piece for The 14th Factory, visitors were invited to sit with her and weave their personal stories into an ever-growing work which flowed and folded through the space like a river.
Stop by @kongartspace in Hong Kong to see more of @movanachen photography. If you’re in HK, stay safe. .

  • If you’re in NYC, be sure to check out the solo exhibition by 2017 14F collaborator Dominique Fung at Ross+Kramer Gallery before the show closes on July 26th!

Known for her work that depicts Orientalizing tropes of period artifacts, in ‘Wash your Corners’ Dominique Fung subverts the fantasies and dangers of the “Orient,” reclaiming the space once inhabited by false narratives as her own. Creamy and sensual painted bodies, baths, fine china, ‘oriental’ rugs, rose petals, slippers, knick-knacks, and food coexist in a surreal multilayered pictorial space.
Fung’s work for the 14th Factory’s 2017 iteration, manifested as specially commissioned paintings that featured in the installation environment of ‘The Barmecide Feast’, both as a response to, and replacement of, the European neo-classical paintings that appeared in the original set piece in ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. (Scroll to the last painting in this post)

Congrats Dominique on your first solo in New York.

  • Congrats to #14thFam member @thegloriayu for her new position working with Asia’s premier luxury fashion retailer @lanecrawford on their corporate social responsibility efforts and strategy. This reflects the 14th’s shared vision that creativity could be a force for social change — aside from creating spiritually stimulating work, we could also create impact by being conscious of the materials we use, the people we empower and the ways we can give back more to the world than we take. Proud of the vision and achievements of our Fam! #14thfactory

  • Gary Gunn @gunngary, who designed the soundscape for the whole installation environment and soundtrack for all video works, is the artist who is probably most involved in The 14th Factory next to Simon Birch. In 2016, Oprah selected him for her inaugural Super Soul 100 list, honoring “the world’s biggest trailblazers, innovators, and visionaries”. Recently, we get to ask Gunn a few questions… check out the full interview and soundtrack from the project via the link on profile!

  • 'I think I am a sponge for experiences, whether it is absorbing the latest Grime music, losing it in clubs with Skepta and Stormzy blaring out of speakers, or fighting through mud in a Spartan race in Taiwan. I am perhaps a conduit for those experiences, gestating and transforming them into paint, steel and wood and film.' - Simon Birch
